Problems of knot detection for lumber scanning systems have resulted in development of technology to provide more positive knot detection than is currently available for CCD cameras. Knots have successfully been detected by a thermographic system in which knots are either cooler or hotter than clear wood. Radio frequency heating of lumber for 10 seconds produced thermographic images of softwood lumber with knots that differed significantly in temperature from clear wood. For hardwood species knot temperature did not differ significantly from clear wood. Following infrared lamps heating only four of six softwood species and two of six hardwood species had significant differences between knot and clear wood. Measurement of the four physical properties known to influence wood thermal properties showed that specific gravity, extractives content and fibril angle differed significantly between softwood and hardwood species. Equilibrium moisture content did not differ significantly. The higher levels for softwoods of the three variables positively correlated with thermal response explains why detecting knots thermographically is easier for softwoods compared to hardwoods.
