The effectiveness of different grading systems for structural timber of various species was compared in this study. More than 1,330 beams of the softwood species Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Larix decidua and Pseudotsuga menziesii as well as the hardwood species Quercus robur and Fagus sylvatica were machine strength graded by bending, X-ray, stress wave and ultrasonic systems. Additionally this study investigated to which extent grading accuracy can be improved by combining different grading systems. All samples were also graded visually according to the German standard DIN 4074. The study shows that all machine grading systems are more efficient than the time-consuming visual grading under laboratory conditions. For ultrasonic and stress wave systems improvements for the softwood species were achieved through additional density measurements by an X-ray system. Moreover an additional inclusion of data on knots increases the accuracy of all grading systems.
