A new principle of a dielectric moisture meter measuring moisture gradient in wood was proposed. This method is named Electrode Scanning Moisture Analysis (ESMA ) because a moisture signal is detected by measuring a capacity change during electrode scanning. The capacity decreased logarithmically with increase of an electrode distance, and patterns of capacity-electrode distance curve reflected the moisture content distribution in wood. The moisture distribution was denoted by a first kind Fredholm type integral equation by using a capacity change due to change of an electrode distance and a kerner function which was given by capacity sensitivity per unit moisture content. The integral equation was solved by rewriting it to a system of simultaneous linear equations. The solution was unstable and showed "ill-posed" problem. However, a post smoothing of data using a least square method showed good reproduction of the original moisture distribution. These results showed that the principle of the electrode scanning moisture analysis is effective to estimate the moisture gradient in wood.
