Environmentally Assisted Cracking (EAC) of Light Water Reactor (LWR) components has been, and continues to be, a major equipment reliability challenge to the LWR fleet worldwide. With an increasing need to improve confidence in the ability of surface inspection to detect defects and discriminate between EAC and spurious indications, alternative technologies have been pursued; one such technique being surface replication. The flexibility and toughness of Polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) polymers enables high resolution three-dimensional facsimiles of complex engineering surfaces to be acquired over a wide range of conditions, including underwater. Minimising 'false-calls' and ability to inspect previously inaccessible regions has increased awareness of replication in the LWR world. This paper provides a summary of PVS replication and assessment methods. Examples from LWR utilities in Europe and the USA are used to illustrate applications, flexibility and sensitivity of replication systems.
