Failures of bolted joints continue to occur in mechanical structures and equipment, primarily by fatigue of their fasteners. It appears that designers and fabricators are often not well versed in principles and good practice required to properly construct such components. All too often preloading requirements to avoid fatigue failure are poorly understood, including the way in which preload of fasteners should be applied. Extra loading of fasteners induced by prizing action is often neglected, and stress concentrations induced, by threads are sometimes ignored or underestimated. Principles of sound design are illustrated in this paper, which also includes a comparison of several design methods for a flange over an opening in a pressure vessel undergoing cyclic pressurisation. Effects of inadequate preload and of neglect of proper consideration of prizing between faces of the mating surfaces are shown.
