It has obviously effect on the safety and stability of underground opening owning to the excavation of an adjacent new working tunnel in vicinity of an existing opening. In order to ensure the safe exploitation of orebody resources, it is remarkably important to preserve the stability of constructed underground opening and constructing tunnel. In this study, the mutual effect of adjacent new working tunnel on surrounding rock stability of underground opening has been investigated by numerical analyses using ANSYS finite element code. It is shown that the stress distributions around new tunnels differ quantitatively and qualitatively owing to conditions of their location and distance relative to the opening contour. The excavation of new tunnels has a remarkable influence on the stress distribution in local roof zone of constructed underground opening. In order to assess the safety and stability of new tunnel and underground opening, the stress safety factor based on the Drucker-Prager yield criteria is put forward. By analyses of stress safety factor, it is recommended to arrange new working tunnel at a distance not closer than 20m from the roof boundaries of openings to ensure stability of openings and new working tunnels for the favoring exploitation.
