The parametric sensitivity behavior and rule of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) are discussed with sensitivity and normalized sensitivity. Safe region and runaway region are determined in β~Da plane. It is found that when γis less than 4, the reactor can be operated safely in the whole parameters region. While γ> 4, the reactor can be operated safely only as the parameter β is less than βc. As γ> 4 and β<βc, the reactor is operated in runaway region and the output temperature is sensitive to the input parameters. In order to operate the reactor safely and prevent accident taking place, the input parameters should be chosen in safety region. An application of parametric sensitivity figure for an exothermic reaction involving the hydrolysis of propylene oxide to propylene glycol is illustrated.
