The early stages of tarnish film formation on silver in atmospheres containing hydrogen sulfide and nitrogen dioxide were examined. Relative humidity and sub-ppm levels of H2S and NO_2 were controlled in a flowing mixed gas chamber, and film growth was measured in situ by quartz crystal microbalance. Tarnish films were analyzed by XPS and FESEM. The processes of film growth for these two corrosive gas species were compared and contrasted. Important contributing factors are the oxidizing power of the gases, the solubility of corrosion products, and the ionic and electronic transport properties of the corrosion product films.
