Aluminum alloy AA2024-T3 has been subjected to different pretreatments prior to the conversion coating process. The amount of hexavalent chromium retained in the chromate conversion coating (CCC) formed on AA2024-T3 has been found to depend on the surface condition of the alloy substrate. The pretreated surfaces were analyzed using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to provide insight on the composition of the surface film formed on AA2024-T3 following pretreatments and to compare changes from received condition, occurring due to these pretreatments. The pretreated surfaces were then tested for their corrosion properties in 0.01M NaCl solution using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The ratio of hexavalent chromium in the CCCs have been determined using X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES). The effects of various pretreatments have been discussed with respect to the nature of the native oxide film and the resulting changes in the chromate conversion coatings. An inverse correlation between the polarization resistance of the pretreated surface and hexavalent chromium content in the CCC has been observed.
