The benefit of combining electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analytical (x-ray photoelectron spec-troscopy (XPS)) measurements to understand issues involving corrosion, adhesive bonding, and semiconductor passivation is discussed and demonstrated. Effects of the ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment of the electron spectrometer are examined. Four examples illustrating the synergism of the combined approach are presented: corrosion of pure aluminum at different pHs, passivity of stainless aluminum, hydration of aluminum adherends, and anodization of (HgCd)Te.
