Species related to wheat, Roegneria ciliaris, R. kamoji, and Leymus racemosus, with scab resistance were crossed and then backcrossed to common wheat. Three T, aestivum-L. racemosus, one T, aestivum-R ciliaris, and one T. aestivum-R. kamoji addition lines with scab resistance were selected and identified in the progenies through mitotic and meiotic analysis, C-banding, and FISH combined with scab screening. Translocations were induced by means of irradiation, gametocidal chromosome effects, Ph'-gene induced chromosome pairing, and tissue culture. A total of 36 lines with translocated chromosomes between L. racemosus and wheat were obtained. C-banding and FISH techniques were used to identify the alien chromosome and chromosome segments. Their homoeologous relationships with wheat chromosomes were determined by RFLP analysis. The scab-resistance genes were primarily located on L. racemosus chromosomes 5Lr#1, 7Lr#1, and ?Lr#1; R. ciliaris chromosome 2S~c; and R. kamoji chromosome 1R~(ts). To increase the level of resistance and broaden the gene sources, crosses between lines with resistance genes of different origin were made. Some resistant lines with good agronomic traits have been developed and are being used for wheat improvement and genetic studies.
