Under the auspices of McKnight Foundation Collaborative Crop Research Program that began in 1995 between Nanjing Agricultural University and Kansas State University, we have followed two main strategies to control the damage to wheat plant caused by Fusarium head scab disease of wheat. In the first strategy, which Profs. Liu and Chen and their colleagues have worked on for many years, they have introgressed new resistance genes into wheat from perennial grasses such as Roegneria and Leymus. The second strategy, which visiting scientists Wenpin Chen and Wanlong Li initiated in our laboratory at Kansas State University, involves the analysis of genes involved in the plant-pathogen interaction between the host and the fungus and their manipulation in improving resistance of wheat plant to scab fungus.
