A steel cord with a thin film of copper metal was prepared by substitution methods over a zinc plating which was applied previously. The performance of this thin film of copper as an adhesive between a steel cord and a rubber compound was studied to obtain greater adhesion at high temperature cures and comparing its results to that of conventional brass plating. The adhesion properties of the cord with a thin film of copper used in this study were no better than those of brass-plated steel cords due to the partial oxidation of the zinc layer and the exposure of some iron on the outer surface. However, the adhesion of the copper film plated cord did not decreased even at a 185 ℃ cure. This highly stable adhesion at elevated temperatures suggested the feasibility of a thin film of copper as a powerful adhesive. The formation of an adhesion interphase between the copper film and rubber was also discussed related to the surface analysis results of pulled-out cords.
