Simulation methods which allow for the modeling of vehicle system as well as tire and roadway interaction have been developed and implemented, using an approach termed "Virtual Proving Ground Analysis''. This method uses a dynamic nonlinear finite element analysis approach to evaluate vehicle systems with respect to vehicle dynamics, durability and noise and vibration. Tire models are critical in the feasibility of performing Virtual Proving Ground analyses and have been developed to capture a variety of inputs. These tires have been developed to include the composite material definition of the tire carcass. This paper will describe the Virtual Proving Ground approach, and the development of composite material finite element tire models which can be applied to performing a variety of vehicle simulations.
