Materials for the carcass of a radial tire must have desirable features such as high modulus, low shrinkage, high strength and durability. Unfortunately, no material has satisfied these needs at a time. Recently, a new fiber, PEN has introduced into tire reinforcement market. PEN can fulfill many different requirements for the tire application. The high performance of PEN, including both dimensional and thermal stability, makes it possible to use it as reinforcement for the high performance tire. In addition, the purpose of weight reduction and rolling resistance reduction can be achieved by using PEN due to its high strength and modulus. In this presentation, potential of PEN as tire reinforcement will be discussed. In addition, properties of PEN in/after simulated tire-manufacturing process and in-use properties of PEN under various conditions are presented.
