摘要

Efficient enforcement of motor carrier safety regulations requires access to accurate data on safety performance of carriers. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies provide opportunities for improving highway safety through effective screening for safety inspections based on accessibility to and timely delivery of real time safety data. This paper examines various ITS technologies deployed to facilitate information exchange at roadside safety enforcement operations that are directed at improving safety of commercial vehicle operations. The paper also identifies factors to be considered in the evaluating of technology options. Opportunities and challenges of ITS technology deployment to enhance truck safety are also presented.
