The shortage of truck parking spaces in public rest areas and at privately owned truck stops has recently been recognized as a serious problem, with implications for driver fatigue and highway safety. This paper reviews the truck parking problem, the type of data required for determining truck parking space utilization at rest areas, and the various conventional methods adopted for data collection in past studies. It addresses the limitations of conventional data collection methods and explores the potential applications of remote sensing for monitoring the parking space requirements at rest areas.
