Effects of ammonium, dissolved oxygen (DO) and organic substance on nitritation in a biological turbulent bed reactor (BTBR) was studied. The results showed that nitrite accumulation was variable due to inhibiting nitrite oxidizer by high concentration of free ammonia. As concentration of NH_4~+-N 300mg/l in influent and DO was 0.5~1.0mg/l in the reactor, nitrite accumulation rate (NO_2~--N/(NO_2~--N+ NO_3~--N)) was above 80% and kept unchanged for a long time. In the case of 2~3mg/l of DO and 200mg/l of TOC, organic substances hardly affected the nitritation. As DO was lowered to 0.5~1.0mg/l and TOC was increased to more than 100mg/l, the nitritation almost stopped. Ways of achieving nitritation and its stabilities were discussed also in this paper.
