Effect of variation flow ratios on performance of split-feed anaerobic baffled reactor

The performance of a Spilt-Feed Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (SFABR), with four compartments and a volume of 14.8 liters, treating a synthetic wastewater, was investigated. The reactor was started with organic loading rate of 1.2kgCOD/(m~3.d), and then the rate was steadily increased to 9.0 kgCOD/(m~3.d). The results showed that the start-up of the SFABR is achieved for 40 days , and the effluent COD of 100 mg/L on average was obtained in each compartment, and the COD removal sustained higher than 90%. Compared with the traditional way of inlet ABR, SFABR process stability and overall degradation rates can be increased by separately feed for each compartment, when loading rate increased from 1.56kgCOD/(m~3d) to 9. 0kgCOD/(m~3d), over loading didn't result in acidifying, and the removal of COD is stabilized between 90% and 100%. The flow ratio had considerable impact on the effluent COD and VFA in the first compartment, and on the sludge activity in each compartment. When the feed in compartment 1 is over loaded, the sludge methanogenic activity is inhibited in the first and second compartments; the concentration of VFA and COD is increased and the circumstance became acidified in compartment 1 .Meanwhile, the effluent COD in compartment 2 is increased too. Hence, the proper flow ratio is the key factor of running SFABR.
