To upgrade the existed wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using oxidation ditch with nitrogen removal, studies of factors influencing simultaneous nitrification and denitrification(SND), such as dissolved oxygen (DO), inner nitrate recycle, mixed liquor suspended solid(MLSS) concentration and the ratio of COD to total nitrogen were carried out to get high nitrogen removal efficiency. A pilot -scale Orbal oxidation ditch was used in the studies to treat the domestic wastewater from the septic tank which characters low ratio of COD to nitrogen in the influent, the equipment ran for eight months. The advantages of the research are the following: By controlling the DO level in the out channel, SND does happen in the pilot Orbal oxidation ditch and DO also is the key factor to nitrogen removal without definitely anoxic zone. Somehow, via SND, high nitrogen removal efficiency up to 60% can be stable achieved with an influent COD to total nitrogen ratio of average 3.4 and no any external carbon was added. No sludge settlement problem occurred during the period of low DO in the out channel. At the same time, low cost could be observed.
