Swim-bed technology, using a single vessel contained a novel acryl-fiber biomass carrier-biofringe (BF) combined with a settling tank, demonstrated a promising effective treatment of organic wastewater. Even at the high volumetric loading rates of 6 kg-COD/m~3/d, average COD removal rate of 96.8% and total nitrogen (TN) removal rate of 59.1% were achieved. Mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) concentrations in the reactor were over 20g/L, while sludge volume index (SVI) was as low as 30. The average diameter of sludge floes was measured to be 1.23mm and many protozoas were found in the sludge. High amount of Extracellular polymers substance (EPS) was detected in the suspended sludge and attached sludge on BF. EPS contained in mixed liquor accounted for the formation of the granular-like floes, which associated with a remarkable sludge settlement.
