An innovative process, intermittently cyclic activated sludge membrane bioreactor(ICAS-MBR), was proposed as a process for decentralized treatment and reuse of domestic wastewater. There were two main tanks, a stirred tank and an aerated tank in the system. The membrane with pore size of 0.1 μm was immerged in the aerated tank for suction the effluent. The activated sludge liquor was intermittently recycled between the two tanks with 1 h recycling and 2h pause. In laboratory, the performance of this system was investigated with real domestic wastewater feeding for long term. It was found that with the recycling on and off, the microorganism community underwent anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic phases in space or time sequence, which enhanced the phosphorus(P) release, denitrification and P uptakes, and led obvious changes of microorganism communities and better settlement performance of the sludge liquor. The simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was improved by separated aeration in aerated tank. The contents of COD, NH_4-N, TN and TP in the effluent were reduced less than 15mg/L, 1mg/L, 15mg/L and 1mg/L, respectively. The membrane flux could be restored weekly with physical cleaning but not with chemicals.
