The microfiltration of activated sludge wastewater is a very complex process, in which membrane fouling is crucial problem should to be resolved. Cake layer formation can be the dominant membrane fouling mechanisms. Microstructure of cake layer, including volume fraction of the pores, relative location of the pores, geometrical structure of the pores, has not been explored until now, which is a key factor determining membrane permeate flux. In this paper, fractal theory was used to gain knowledge of cake microstructure and its correlation to cake properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and image analyzer were utilized to estimate pore shape and pore area distributions. Two different fractal dimension model, pore area distribution fractal dimension (D_s) pore boundary fractal dimension (D_b), were introduced to illuminate the relationship of cake layer morphology and its permeation. The results indicate that the cake layer had good fractal characteristics, the pore area distribution fractal dimension and the pore boundary fractal dimension were available parameters to estimate cake layer permeability and cake layer microstructure.
