Biodegradation of linear alky benzene sulphonate (LAS) was investigated in this study. From anaerobic batch experiment investigations, a relationship between the biological utilization of glucose as co-substrate for the reduction of LAS under anaerobic conditions was proposed using an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) The anaerobic batch experiment on LAS showed that the gas production which the substrate contained sodium acetate and glucose obviously larger than the gas production which the substrates only contained LAS, and the effecting of glucose was prior to the effecting of sodium acetate. In continuous experiment, therefore, the glucose should be regard as the co-substrate. The volumetric LAS loading rate was 0.025kgLAS/ (m3.d), and the sludge loading rate was 0.006gLAS/(gVSS.d). The ABR was seed digested sewage sludge to operate for 1 years to assess reactor performance during start-up ,then operated for 6 months with a feed contained LAS .Influent LAS to the reactor was 1000mg/L,72h of HRT , and the glucose was regard as co-substrate , operated 60 days , the removal efficiency of COD could stable at 70%, when the concentration of LAS increased to 1250 mg/L,55h of HRT, the removal efficiency of COD still maintain at 70%. These parameters showed that the treatment of LAS had a good property which could be endured shock loading rate. In this experiment, it was important to control the pH values, especially in the first compartment. The reason that when pH values had been decreased in the first compartment, the concentration of sulfate was also decreased which led to the increasing of the concentration of dissociative of H_2S, and the activity of methanogenic bacteria was also inhibited which led to the increasing of concentration of COD in the first compartment, this result in the total removal efficiency of COD had been decreased.
