Using GIS and landscape pattern theory this paper analyzes on the typical landscapes, the temporal-spatial feature of land use dynamic change and their ecological conditions in Yan'an city, based on the translated data from remote sensing images in 1985, 1996 and 2000. The results indicate that in the past 15 years, the farmland, grassland, water body and build-up areas had a tendency of increase, while the woodland decreased and the bared land increased;with the help of the project of "Beautifying the Mountains and Rivers" which begun in 1997 in Yan'an, the landscape ecosystems began to be rehabilitated and reconstructed, the area of bared land and the losing rate of woodland became smaller. The results also show that the landscape structure changed dramatically, the landscape heterogeneity and landscape diversity increased, and the landscape was getting more and more balanced; while the water and soil conservation countermeasures have been working well in recent years, more farmland had changed to grassland and woodland during 1996 to 2000, the largest patch index (LPI) of the dominant kind of land use increased and the landscape diversity decreased.
