Spatial scale can refer to both spatial resolution and spatial extent. Regional land-use pattern occurs not only at certain spatial resolution but also at certain spatial extent, not only at certain spatial scale but also at certain classification. Besides, regional land use pattern is also related to the data source used. Study of spatial scale effect on regional land-use pattern analysis for construction of spatial model of regional land-use change entails consideration of regional land-use classification system selected and data source used. Theobjective of this paper is to investigate the effect characteristics of spatial scale on the results of regional land-use pattern analysis for two different classification systems and different data sources in terms of spatial autocorrelation by empirical study in the Fujian province of China so as to provide some useful information for construction of multi-scale or hierarchical spatial model of regional land-use dynamics. Fujian province, Zhangzhou municipality, Longhai County and Luoyuan County, are selected representing three hierarchical management levels. In Longhai County, two different data sources are used: the 1:100,000 land use map interpreted from Landsat TM of 2000 and 1:10,000 land use surveying map of 2000. The results show that characteristics of spatial scale effect on pattern of regional land-use categories are different for different administration levels, different classification systems and different data source.In Fujian province, Moran's I of 5 main land use types vary slightly across a range of spatial resolution. In Zhangzhou municipality, Moran's I of all land use types increase with the increasing grain size although some spikes exist across a range of spatial resolution. In Longhai County and Luoyuan County, Moran's I decrease with the increasing grain size although some spikes exist. The patterns of most regional land use types show a positive spatial autocorrelation across a range of scales. Reducing number of land-use for one classification system may diminish the loss of information of land use area across the range of scale and the effect of spatial scale on regional land-use analysis in certain extent.
