The concept of software development environment (SDE) was emerged in the late 1970s. The first instance was Unix Programmers Workbench, and the first example of conceptual models of environment was Ada Stoneman's famous "onion-skin" diagram. This model represents an architectural point of view of environment builders, like a blueprint model of a house represents a viewpoint of carpenters who build it. The latest version of those architectural model of SDE is the "Toaster" model of ECMA/NIST. This model also reflects an architectural point of view, but now the modeling target is not a small house but a complex building with various facilities.
