Humans and computers meet in the office. Routine work has already been taken over by computers, to a large degree. Decision makers depend more and more on computers to provide them with approprite information. Developments in information technology have profound effects on the way we work, where we work, how we organise ourselves. A reshaping of organisations from hierarchical structures to network structures is expected because of the evolution of information technology. People will increasingly like their working lives in a "world of models". Abstraction skills will be rewarded. Broad and deep education of the population will become necessary in order for a country to remain competitive in the information society. Research priorities should be reworked in the light of the broader need of the whole of society to interact with computers on a daily basis. Information resource management and computerised business process support are among the high-priority research fields of the future.
