Quantitative Remote Sensing of Water Constituents in Taihu Lake

Remote sensing is an effective technique for quickly monitoring of large-scale water quality. Different from multispectral remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging, or called imaging spectrometry, can acquire images in hundreds of registered, contiguous spectral bands such that for each image pixel it is possible to derive a complete reflectance spectrum. So, hyperspectral remote sensing can provide us more precise information for the water constituents extraction. Additionally, in the last decade, the empirical models have been widely used in the estimation of Water Constituents. In this paper, semi-empirical and analytical models were also established for the remote sensing of water quality in Taihu lake. Analytical models are based on bio-optical model and radioactive-transfer theory, the parameters of which have distinct physical meanings and universal applicability. To meet the high requirements of water quality monitoring in China, a Remote-sensing Environmental Monitoring System (REMS V1.0) is also introduced in this paper. REMS is the first integrated system in the mainland developed to meet the multi-resource, multi-temporal and multi-thematic data processing, analyzing and products distributing in the monitoring of inland water pollution using remote sensing technology in China. REMS provide professional ability to quickly extract the major characters of water resource such as chlorophyll content, Total Suspended Matter (TSM), Yellow Substance, blue algae distribution e tc. In order to improve the precision of water parameters extraction, some new algorithms and functions are also realized and integrated in REMS software system.
