This paper shows how connected multimedia services can be integrated within a networked embedded system. Such services can preserve a multimedia session even though the end-user moves from one computing environment to another. To benefit from immediate multimedia services, the user only needs to carry a small mobile pad, such as a PDA or a Cellular phone showing a list of I/O devices that can be used for an on-going multimedia session. It is not required to re-establish the session. When the user clicks and selects a suitable device from the list, the session is immediately migrated to the selected device. This paper focuses on the session preservation protocol and describes how we use SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for session preservation. Our integrated architecture provides several features: registration and authentication of the mobile user and connected devices, detection of user's leave and presence, and session preservation. We also present an illustrative application: the connected video surveillance. We describe the design of a connected multimedia services system based on X. 10 and SIP that supports both user mobility and multimedia session preservation in a ubiquitous wired/wireless home network environment.
