GEOMECHANICAL INVESTIGATION OF AN ARGILLACEOUS FORMATION IN THE EAST OF FRANCE

This paper is devoted to mechanical behavior of a French argillaceous rock, in which will be constructed an underground laboratory for studying the feasibility of a radioactive waste disposal in that formation. After an introduction of its geological environment, short term and long term mechanical behavior are separately presented. Since the studied formation is a typical porous media, mechanical properties are coupled with transport phenomena. Time dependent behavior of this formation has been demonstrated by special radial extension tests. Temperature effects on long term mechanical behavior are significant, but discreet on short term mechanical behavior. Verification and development of constitutive laws integrating coupled phenomena and time dependent behavior are one of the main objectives of underground tests in the future laboratory. Strategy of geomechanical researches for carrying out these tests is established.
