The basic concept of coupling regulation of flow and sediment transport is: based on the fully consideration of the sediment carrying capacity of the lower Yellow River channel, the regulation volume of the reservoir(s) is used to control and regulate flow and sediment transport by the way of storing or discharging so that the nature process of flow and sediment transport is changed. Then, the bad relationship between flow and its sediment concentration will be improved to bring sediment to the sea. In 2001, the Xiaolangdi Reservoir was put into operation. This made the regulation of flow and sediment transport became possible and practical.
