Librarians have been teaching how to search the Web for a decade. It is heartening that we continue to refine our techniques for effectively accomplishing this task. Our understanding of the evolving Web, of our users, and of instructional methods have kept this topic fresh and enlivening over the years. Strategies for teaching the Web present us with a challenge. In the context of this paper, the Web refers to the free Web, material that is available to everyone. This material is not "ours." We librarians do not select it for inclusion on this medium, nor do we purchase it for our users. The search tools that we teach are also free, and are not geared to the library market. The Web is a volatile environment. Sites come and go. The search tools used to locate these sites are constantly evolving. You may learn a tool thoroughly, only to have it change overnight. Because of this, we cannot hang our hats on the specific features of a particular search tool, or indeed, on a particular search tool itself. What we teach in our sessions should persist through these ephemeral circumstances. Our goal is fundamental: to create successful lifelong users of search tools on the Web. This paper will present top techniques to turn you into a top search trainer.
