Abstract: A novel method for contour-mapping principal stressdistributions is described. In the polarimeterdeveloped, a reference beam of light consists of thetwo orthogonal linearly polarized components thatinterfere with their counterpart orthogonal componentsof an elliptically polarized signal beam of light. Twocrossed interference patterns are formed over a MOS TVcamera so that the significant parameters fordetermining a principal stress distribution can berecorded in a computer. The major advantage is that notonly each of the two principal stresses but also theprincipal stress- difference can be independentlydetermined, and no use of any optical component forpolarization alignment makes it possible to follow arapid change in stress distribution within the maximumframe rate 2066 s$+$MIN@1$/ of the MOS TV camera. !5
