Chapter 21 Tailoring Adsorption-Desorption Properties of Hydroamination Catalysts with Ionic Liquids

Highly active and selective homogeneous catalysts are known for atom efficient syntheses of aromatic and aliphatic amines from alkenes and alkynes. We have shown that catalytically active metal cations (such as Zn~(2+)) can be incorporated in zeolites and display a higher activity due to the simultaneous presence of Lewis acid sites and Bronsted acidic hydroxyl groups. Surprisingly high catalytic activities were also observed for molecular catalysts in two phase systems where the catalyst was dissolved in an ionic liquid. The high activity is caused by a high solubility of the reactants in the catalyst phase whereas the products are hardly soluble. Here we report on well-tailored catalysts combining both approaches.
