Interlocking technology is developing in long lasting phases, which typically last for many decades each.rnStarting with mechanical interlockings followed by electromechanical and relay interlockings today’s solutionsrnare dominated mainly by electronic interlockings based on proprietary solutions. In other industry areas the usernof proprietary solutions has already passed by and standard industrial solutions are used – including for failsafernapplications. The paper describes the overall development to conclude why standard solutions willrndominate failsafernapplications in railways as the next technological phase. Safety processes in other industriesrnare considered in order to enable a comparative view on railway safety. Some examples will also be describedrnwhere industrial automation is already successfully in use in railway signalling.
