摘要

Two challenges for the UK railway industry are to reduce the costs and impact of engineering works. NetworkrnRail has several workstreams across the whole of Engineering aiming for the 2030 railway.rnOne project is to provide signalling support to the Modular S&C initiative where the target is for turnouts to bernrenewed in 8 hours. Facilitating the change of control from old mechanism to new and testing the installation inrn30 minutes is a challenging target. With the aid of eight graduate engineers, a method of facilitating the worksrnhas been developed and a proof of concept unit constructed.rnA bigger challenge is to enable secondary routes to be resignalled in an economic manner whilst preparingrnthem for eventual conversion to ERTMS. A project is ongoing to review the design, construction and testingrnprocesses and some ideas of what the solution might look like are included.rnThe theme of the paper is challenging the way we do things and the principles we apply, using the two projectsrnto illustrate the opportunities for young engineers to innovate.
