THE EFFECT OF HUMIDITY IN FIBER OPTIC CONNECTORS

Fiber optic networks are used in manufacturing plants and industrial enterprise infrastructure technology to support industrial and enterprise networks. Despite the fact that fiber optics technology has many advantages, field implementation and fiber deployment to industrial facilities face many challenges. These environments may include areas with high relative humidity beyond what is specified in the TIA/EIA 568-C.3 standard. Further research is needed to insure the reliability of these connectors if they are used in areas other than air-conditioned data centers. This paper investigates the effect of high relative humidity on optical performance of fiber optic connectors. An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) was the test equipment used to generate traces of a fiber optic link with connector pair under high relative humidity. The results of this experimental research indicate that high relative humidity does not affect the optical performance of multimode fiber optic connectors. When relative humidity is increased, the reflectance and insertion loss have changed slightly but not to a level that can be a concern based on the current industry standards. When relative humidity is increased, reflectance showed negligible increase at first, after that it improved slightly through a period of six days. After the six-day period, relative humidity was decreased to normal and reflectance improved to about one decibel for the next three weeks. The findings indicate very minor effects of humidity on optical performance on multimode fiber optic connectors. The findings may lead to the development of a new industry standard specifically for the harsh environments such as industrial and automation applications. It may help technicians, engineers, and management better understand the effect of high relative humidity on fiber optic connectors.
