The prime objective of a chemical analyzer is to "determine the concentration of one or more species in a mixture." We need to integrate the skills of mechanical, electrical, and chemistry disciplines into designing the sample preparation portion of analyzer systems. The "biggest maintenance task" is to provide continuous presentation of a representative sample to the detector in a suitably conditioned form! We need to place more emphasis on chemistry. The electronic and computer specialists cannot correct for poor analytical technique. The basic concept for design and maintenance should be: Keep It Simple, Make It Maintainable, and Reliability Will Follow!
