Industrial Automation has been used for years in the plant-floor level (site) to increase productivity and improve quality, based on assumptions about how the process behaves. Technologies currently available enable unprecedented possibilities to bring automated systems to the next level.rnTraditionally, Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications provide an interface for operators to interact with the system, locally. While it remains an important goal of these applications, modern SCADA systems provide benefits beyond their traditional scope:rn1. Make the information available to local and remote users. Support for mobile devices and thinrnclient technology delivers the information automatically at the fingertips of its appropriaternconsumers.rn2. Store data into databases and apply rules to predict how the equipment and process will behavernin the future and suggest preventive actions.rn3. Combine current data with history data to create dashboards with Key Performance Indicatorsrnfor supervisors and executives.rnThis paper describes typical architectures and technologies available for enterprise integration of automated systems in the oil and gas industry.
