From Chaos to Performance: Alarm Management Using ISA-18.2

The epic struggle of the operator to convert a constant flood of alarms to information and situational awareness still continues in many plants today. The new standard, ISA-18.2 Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries, provides a roadmap to end the perpetual struggle and take a step towards operational excellence. This paper follows the steps of the ISA18.02 alarm management lifecycle and how those steps solve the common pitfalls of alarm systems. In addition, ISA18.02 provides a framework which will allow operators to address one of the fundamental conclusions of Bransby and Jenkinson that "Poor performance costs money in lost production and plant damage and weakens a very important line of defense against hazards to people." [3]rnThe ISA18.02 lifecycle relates the key activities of alarm management. Some of these are the development of an alarm philosophy, rationalization of alarms, implementation, and the very important stage of operation. Other key stages are monitoring and assessment, management of change, and audit.rnCompleting the activities highlighted in the lifecycle will reduce the problems of nuisance alarms, stale alarms, unauthorized changes, and other common alarm problems. The result is an alarm system that is a true aid to the operator to avoid safety, environment, and quality incidents as well as increase uptime and productivity. Good alarm system performance supports operational excellence. In 2002, Campbell Brown stated "the fundamental goal isrnthat Alarm Systems will be designed, procured and managed so as to deliver the right information, in the right way and at the right time for action by the Control Room Operator (where possible) to avoid, and if not, to minimise, plant upset, asset or environmental damage, and to improve safety" [5], by utilizing the framework that has been developed in ISA18.02 this goal may be possible to realize.
