1. FDI™ (Field Device Integration) is the common evolution of the tried-and-tested EDDL and FDT technology which provides practical benefits for Device and Control System Manufacturers, and the facility owner-operators. FDI is backwards-compatible for the tens-of-millions of HART, Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus Devices in the field. FDI Architecture is also forward-focused on the Digital Transformation/interface between the OT/IT worlds, and is ready for IloT/lndustrie4.0 with cyber-security considerations including digital-signatures and "sandbox" execution. 2. An FDI Device Package includes the required Electronic Device Description (FDD) File, plus optional User Interface Plugin (UIP) and attachment files. These provide Control/Asset Management systems with everything they need to support the field Device. 3. From the Device Manufacturer's viewpoint, the development and support of the FDI Package for their Device is greatly simplified by the technology's tools and processes which include an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that provides software components, Package and Host testing techniques, and Package distribution infrastructure. 4. Manufacturers can provide new/updated FDI Packages to their global users by all the usual software distribution methods - with their potential cyber-security risks. To counter this, FDI technology utilizes the well-established concept of digital-signatures to guarantee that the contents of an FDI Device Package have not been altered in transit. 5. In addition to digital-signatures, FDI Technology provides robust security for the UIP hosting environment, requiring that every FDI Host implements a UlP-execution "sandbox" that prevents access to any external system resources (e.g. the internet) which limits the adverse effects a compromised UIP could have on its system and beyond.
