This work proposes to study ways of improving crystallization processes, choosing the batch crystallization of adipic acid as a case study. In this process, the solution is cooled, making the solution supersaturated, leading to the develpoment of crystals. A software that models the crystallization process has been developed and the influence of the process variables on the final crystal size distribution (CSD) and on the quantity of solids is analysed. The optimal cooling trajectory is considered as an optimization problem. It is postulated as a nonlinear programming problem and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is used in its solution. The results support the good process representation by the developed mathematical model. The optimization problem is very nonlinear and difficult to postulate, but the proposed procedure shows to be robust.
