The combination of membrane separation technology and bioreactors has lead to a new focus on wastewater treatment; membrane bioreactors can be considered as a breakthrough in aerobic or anaerobic treatment of municipal sewage. In this concept, a membrane unit replaces the sedimentation tank, with many advantages such as a higher biomass concentration in the reactor, a reduced reactor volume and an improved product quality. On the other hand, the combination of membrane technology with anaerobic digestion treating wastewaters leads to a decrease in sludge production and to an important energy saving. The aim of this study is to model an anaerobic membrane bioreactor consisting of a cell growth reactor and a membrane filtration device coupled into a single unit process.
