Many investigations have been made on different biomass materials in order to evaluate them as energy sources. Tree barks, as wastes of forest and paper industry, are a widely available type of biomass. They are generally evaluated by direct combustion to generate heat. However, this way of evaluation is not efficient due to their low heat value. In this work, the effects of temperature and pressure on the product yields in the liquefaction of pine barks were studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave in the presence of tetralin-creosote oil solvent mixture under 10-50 bar cold hydrogen pressure at a residence time of 1 hour. The temperature range studied was 300-400℃. The results obtained show that high convertions may be obtained at temperatures lower than 300℃. Total conversion remained almost constant in the temperature and pressure range under study. Hovewer, the oil+gas yield increased with the rise in temperature and pressure. It is also observed that the calorific values of oil and residue were greater than the calorific value of pine barks.
