Since lead compounds have been eliminated from fuels for reasons of public health and of environmental protection, oxygenates is gaining importance and acceptance worldwide as gasoline blending components, not only as octane boosters. The two main classes of competing oxygenates are alcohols and ethers, both possessing the desired characteristics of octane enhancement and CO emissions reduction. In general, ethers are preferable because the similarity with conventional gasoline hydrocarbon constituents. The predominant ether used currently is MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether). In spite of the leadership of MTBE, ETBE (ethyl tert-butyl ether) seems to be a good choice because it combines the blending properties of MTBE and the renewability of ethanol. Besides that, reactive distillation has demonstrated to have lower investment and operational costs and increased reactant conversion in MTBE production. These advantages are potentially transferable to the production of ETBE and other tertiary ethers.
