This work is centered in the development, conception and optimization of a new fixed bed reactor specially designed for the treatment of polluted gaseous effluents: the Auto Cyclic Reactor (ACR). The new concept introduced in the Auto-Cyclic Reactor (ACR) obliges the flow mixture to reverse direction inside the reactor in order to promote the heat transfer from the hot mixture to the cold inlet feed, preventing then the called creeping phenomenon which consists in the movement of the reaction front toward the outlet of the reactor. In fact, due to the low concentration of the reactants in the feed stream (pollutants), the heat generated by the chemical reaction is not enough to ensure the minimum energy required for reaction. Therefore, the cold feed stream cools down the catalytic layer and the reaction front moves to the exit of the reactor shutting down the process. In the new ACR concept, when the reaction front moves up to the exit of the reactor, the heat is transferred to the entrance to warm up the feed stream being the reaction re-ignited. The main advantages of the ACR are its simplicity and compactness, leading to lower initial investments and also lower maintenance and operating costs than the reverse flow concept.
