Open software architectures based on interoperable components are the way forward for the next generation of process engineering tools. The CAPE-OPEN standard achieves true plug and play of process industry components in enterprise software. This paper deals with the unit operation concept within the scope of this open architecture framework. We take as an example a fixed bed reactor.
