Seeking opportunities for energy savings or rational use of energy in sites involving chemical processes is supported by legislation of CR. There are several general approaches how to solve this problem, but on the other hand any particular case is unique. Some ideas follow from comparison with BAT (best available technologies) or other benchmarks. A theory of process integration seems to be another effective tool, especially due to possibility of targeting. However applied standard procedures are often simplified and need not match the actual situation in practice. For instance the theory of process integration assumes utility services adopted to demands of technological processes, while optimisation in a wider sense should take into account central energy sources and distribution systems as well as non-technological structures (e.g. buildings) as a complex. It is beyond the scope of this paper to tackle all these problems and attention is focused to usually neglected effect of heat losses on process integration for both retrofit and design, which is a partial problem of optimal use of energy.
