Deviation of a chemical process from normal operative conditions may lead to formation of substances much more dangerous than normal reagents and products of the process. Reliable experimental data on the quantities of substances that may be formed following accidental events are important to allow hazard assessment. This study was focused on the development and application of specific experimental techniques aimed to collect data on dangerous substances formed in the loss of control of chemical systems. A low phi-factor adiabatic calorimeter was used to simulate runaway conditions. Products characterisation was carried out by analytical techniques, as gas chromatography, FTIR specrroscopy and mass spectrometry. The results obtained allowed collecting detailed information on the nature and relative quantities of dangerous products formed for systems considered in the study.
